Stone-Campbell Symposium

Bruce and I will be attending the Stone-Campbell Symposium in Oregon for the next couple of days. There will be speakers from Churches of Christ (Doug Foster), Disciples of Christ, and the Christian church. I don't really know what to expect, but I know that my historical knowledge about these denominations is pretty thin, so I expect to be learning a lot. I know that Bruce bought this huge book The Encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Movement that I will not be reading any time soon. It's huge! I'm hoping to get the Reader's Digest condensed version at the symposium. Anyway, we'll be out of contact for a few days, but I'm sure I will have much food for thought when I return.

I thought "ICC" referred to Int'l Churches of Christ--a whole different animal than the Christian churches.

Scott,

I was so confused at this symposium because one of the presenters kept referring to the Independent Christian Church/Churches of Christ. Apparently, that's it's real name. He started calling it the "4C" church which helped me...at first, I had no idea! And yes, the ICC is a totally different animal which according to them, some much needed reconciliation has been and is still taking place between mainstream CofC and ICC. It was a good conference...I'll blog about it later.

Pat, I found you through some comments out there on your daughter's blog and scott's. Small world in the CoC, that would be the 2C group, I guess.

Hope you and Bruce had a great time at the conference.

Amy,

It is a small world since I perceive that you are Amy from CH C2. How's that for code? I went to your profile and we have quite a bit in common...Lily's Plastic Purse for one thing. I didn't discover it in time for my own kids, but I will be sharing it with my grandkids. Hope things are going well for you there. I linked to the discussion blog of Mere Discipleship. I haven't read it yet, but Bruce is planning to teach a class using it as springboard for discussion. Since I trust his judgement, I've included it in my Good Reads list. You might check out the kids' book, The miraculous journey of Edward Tulane. Sometimes the best books are kids' books, aren't they? Thanks for visiting and hope to see you around in cyberspace.

I'm finishing up a response that I started on my blog...

Ya know, I actually didn't know the Symposium was occurring. Even though we are technically a part of a church of Christ, and one of our elders works at NCC, we are more of a rural, community church. I'd say the majority of our members aren't familiar with the Restoration movement whatsoever. It sounds like an interesting Symposium, and I'll look forward to reading more about what you thought of it. Please also know that, if you're ever in the area again, you're more than welcome to stay with us. It's an open invite, should you ever want to take us up on it.

I was reading back over some of your other entries. I very much related to what you had to say in the C of C Tag post about getting tired of trying to "bloom where planted." I read that and told my husband-- I feel like that sometimes.

Thanks for your thoughts. You and your girls have inspired me to try to get my mom and sisters (also three girls in our family) to try to correspond more through blogging. I think I've almost made a break-through with my mom, we'll see what happens with the rest.

Take care!
